In health care and public health, burnout is often framed as an individual problem but in reality, it’s a systemic problem. It stems from processes that create friction and environments that make the tasks unnecessarily difficult. A culture of continuous improvement, works to identify those friction points, redesign workflows with intention, and create structures that support the workforce. Instead of placing the burden on individuals to “be more resilient,” leaders must build systems that make high-quality work achievable and sustainable.
In this episode of In Service of Health, host Dr. Joneigh Khaldun sits down with Dr. Alen Voskanian, a physician, COO, author, and a leader in health care transformation to explore why joy is disappearing from the health workforce and what leaders can do to bring it back.
With a career that spans HIV treatment, hospice and palliative care, and health care operations leadership, Dr. Voskanian brings a rare, integrated perspective. He offers a framework for restoring meaning in health care—one he calls Heart, Head, and Body—and makes the case that systems must be redesigned with humanity at the center.
Burnout across health care and public health is a workforce challenge as well as a quality challenge, a safety challenge, and a population health challenge. In pursuing the shared goal of improving population health, health systems across the country are increasingly recognizing that improving systems through continuous quality improvement requires deep partnership with public health. These partnerships help organizations build more aligned, efficient, and supportive structures that reduce friction for the workforce.
PHAB supports these partnerships by helping health care organizations align strategies across population health needs.
