What does it really take to bring clinical medicine and public health closer together?
In this episode of the In Service of Health podcast, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun sits down with Dr. Megan Ranney, Dean of the Yale School of Public Health and C.-E. A. Winslow Professor of Public Health Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine, to explore the worlds of clinical medicine and public health. Dr. Ranney reflects on how her early experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Côte d’Ivoire during the height of the HIV epidemic shaped her commitment to improving systems, advancing access to care, and building stronger bridges between health care and public health.
Together, they talk about why the divide between these fields persists, how data fragmentation slows progress, and what it will take to create more integrated and sustainable models of care. They discuss the realities of practicing medicine today including burnout, limited resources, and growing social needs, and examine evidence-based approaches that hospitals and emergency departments can use to better partner with community organizations.
The conversation also explores the rise of digital health, what has worked and what has not, and the need for long-term payment models that allow technology to support rather than replace human connection. Dr. Ranney shares candid insights from the pandemic, including what public health got right, what it missed, and why rebuilding trust begins with listening.
Dr. Ranney offers a look at her work at Yale to democratize health data by creating faster and more accessible multi-source tools like PopHIVE that help communities understand emerging trends and act in near real time. Sha also shares information about Yale’s MPH program and extends an invitation to Yale’s “Leaders in Public Health,” a distinguished speaker series showcasing accomplished individuals, pioneers, and thought leaders in the field of public health.
PHAB supports partnerships between health care and public health by helping health care organizations align strategies across population health needs.
