Dave A. Chokshi, MD, MSc

Dave A. Chokshi, M.D., MSc. (pronounced Chock-see) is chair of the Common Health Coalition, a not-for-profit organization created to help ensure the U.S. health system is prepared to confront the next crisis. Dr. Chokshi is currently a practicing physician at Bellevue Hospital and the inaugural Sternberg Family Professor of Leadership at the City College of New York. He previously served as the 43rd health commissioner of New York City.

From 2020 to 2022, Dr. Chokshi led the City's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including its historic campaign to vaccinate over six million New Yorkers, saving tens of thousands of lives. Before that, he was the inaugural chief population health officer at NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation's largest public health care system.

Dr. Chokshi has held successive senior leadership roles in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. A Rhodes Scholar and White House Fellow, he is nationally recognized as a transformational leader, clinical innovator, policy expert, and fierce advocate for a stronger and more equitable system.

Dr. Chokshi earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, a Master of Science degree in Global Health Sciences from Oxford University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Public Policy Studies from Duke University. The Common Health Coalition was founded by Kaiser Permanente, AHIP (formerly America’s Health Insurance Plans), the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP), the American Hospital Association (AHA), and the American Medical Association (AMA). The Coalition is dedicated to strengthening partnerships between health care organizations and public health systems, two vitally important components of the U.S. health system that have long operated in parallel.
